1. What are Data Rules in Fogwing IIoT?

Data Rules is one of the critical and core functions within Fogwing IIoT Platform. The real value of IoT comes out when automating the action based on the device data. Data driven action is the best way to react based on the value of the data. Fogwing IIoT Platform simplify the rules declaration and actions without writing any code or script. Fogwing Data Rules executes the following actions based on the data driven action defined.

Type of Notification supported by Fogwing IIoT Platform:

  • Email

  • SMS

  • Webhook (send notification to any third-party app or mobile app via HTTP)

  • Command

The data driven alerts can be triggered as "Warning" or "Critical" based on the user preferences. Either way, all alerts can be sent to anyone (either user or third-party) based on the configuration. All alert notifications are tracked in the "Notification Log" for later reference.

Command is a function to send instructions to any connected devices (must be declared as one of the edge device). Command can be triggered based on the data rules defined. To learn further about command go to :

Please note that SMS alert is available only for the "Startup" and "Growth" subscription accounts. SMS is not enabled for "Community" users.

Command should be declared as "Rules" driven before create Data Rules.

2. How can I create Data Rules in Fogwing IIoT?

This is the most important step to help your platform execute alerts/actions when needed. It caters to function in a way that meets your convenience. Fogwing Enterprise Cloud offers exclusive data rules features through default operation and custom operation alongside command configuration that instructs your device to perform an assigned action.

Pre-condition – You must have application and edge devices with IoThub access created prior to create any data rules since data rules is against the data generated by the edge device.

To Create Data Rules, execute the following steps:

  • Login to your Fogwing IIoT Platform account >>

  • Click ‘Data Rules’ from ‘Data Management’ towards the left, on the menu bar >>

  • Data Rules page with List View will appear >>

  • Click the ‘Add’ button on the top right of the Data Rules page >>

  • Fill in the necessary details >>

  • Click ‘Submit’ button for the rule to be created.

The email ID you enter is where you will receive alerts in case of an emergency. The backend validation processes data in accordance with your set data rule.

Data rule engine validates data if the data is in JSON format (either simple or nested). In the inbound data is in other format, rules will be applied.

3. How can I view Data Rules in Details?

Fogwing Enterprise Cloud offers exclusive data rules features that instructs your device to perform an assigned action. After having successfully set a data rule, you might just want to take a detailed glimpse of it to reassure its functioning. Fogwing facilitates a detailed data rule viewing through its data rule details.

To View Data Rules, execute the following steps:

  • Login to your Fogwing IIoT Platform account

  • Click ‘Data Rules’ from ‘Data Management’ towards the left, on the menu bar

  • Data Rules page with List View will appear

  • Click on the ‘Row’ of the Data Rule you want to View in Detail

  • Data Rule Details page will display

  • Click the top back arrow to return to the List View of Data Rules.

Data Rule Details offer detailed information of each Data Rule and is accessible by all users. Please note that Data Rules Details page displays performance metrics of last 7 days only.

4. How can I Delete Data Rules on Fogwing Platform?

To Delete Data Rules, execute the following steps:

  • Login to your Fogwing IIoT Platform account >>

  • Click ‘Data Rules’ from ‘Data Management’ towards the left, on the menu bar >>

  • Data Rules page with List View will appear >>

  • Click on the ‘View’ button against the Data Rule you wish to Delete >>

  • Data Rule Details page will display >>

  • Click the 'Delete' button towards the bottom right side of the Data Rule Details page >>

  • Re-confirm for Deletion, It will be Deleted.
